DuVernay remembered being told to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy which is why, when she decided to not pursue journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist right after college. The year 1999 was the time she established her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency also launched several lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
